It is common to hear non-runners say they don’t run because running isn’t fun. The organizers of the Rock n Roll Marathon Series would beg to differ, however. To them, running and having fun are not mutually exclusive and in fact, go hand in hand.

That’s the philosophy behind the popular series and organizers ensure that all the Rock n Roll races have plenty of fun to go around. As the name suggests, the races are running events combined with concerts and live music. Runners are treated to live music along the race course and to a big post-race concert.

This fun and partying philosophy might explain why the Rock n Roll Marathon Series have become some of the most popular races in the world, with many races seeing over 15,000 participants. Organized by Competitor Group, the Rock n Roll Marathon Series is the largest running series in the world. According to the organizers, in 2010, there were over 500,000 participants in the series and nearly 700,000 attendees at the Health and Fitness Expos.

The first Rock n Roll race was held in San Diego in 1998 combining elite running, recreational running, and entertainment into a weekend festival. These musically themed races proved to be a big hit and in the past decade and a half the Rock n Roll series has expanded into 23 US cities and several European locations. The Series includes many marathons, half marathons, and one 10 miler. The half marathon is the most popular race and is available at all US based Rock n Roll events and nearly all international locations. Below is an overview of the Rock n Roll half marathon races in the United States.
